Industry Overview

The SouthCoast region provides ample opportunities for healthcare companies. SouthCoast Health, a partner organization with the SouthCoast Development Partnership, is a not-for-profit, community-based health system with multiple access points, offering an integrated continuum of health services throughout southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

SouthCoast Health’s hospitals are located in Fall River, New Bedford and Wareham, MA along with urgent care centers, rehabilitation centers, cancer centers, and several other physician practices throughout the Southcoast region:

  • St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, MA was opened in 1884 and has been a leader in providing quality healthcare in southeastern Massachusetts ever since. St. Luke’s offers many medical services to its patients, with particular expertise in cardiology, neurosurgery, children’s health services, and orthopedic and general surgery.
  • Tobey Hospital in Wareham, MA is the Greater Wareham area’s main health care resource.
  • Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall river, MA was first opened in 1885 and is the region’s only hospital that offers open heart surgery and elective coronary angioplasty. Furthermore, Charlton offers Fall River’s only maternity service.

SouthCoast Health is a major economic engine for the region – employing more than 7,400 healthcare professionals – being the largest employer in the SouthCoast and the 17th largest in the Commonwealth.

Other regional hospital systems include, Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, Morton Hospital in Taunton, and St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River (also a member of the SCDP).

The region is also home to a growing pool of medical professionals with the College of Nursing at UMass Dartmouth, the Bristol Community College Nursing Program, and the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in nearby Providence, RI.

The SouthCoast is home to medical device manufacturing industry cluster, including Sensata Technologies in Taunton, Five Star Surgical in New Bedford, Sterngold Dental in Attleboro, and New England Surgical in Fall River. The cluster is enabled by the region’s lower cost of doing business, affordable real estate, and proximity to the nation’s leading demand centers for medical technology products – Boston, Worcester and Providence.
