A skilled workforce is critical for businesses in deciding whether to locate or expand in a region.
The presence of permanent, good paying jobs strengthens the fabric of the community.
The SCDP is pursuing the following initiatives to strengthen the SouthCoast’s workforce:
- The SCDP will commission comprehensive workforce and labor market data analysis with the goal of identifying the region’s workforce strengths and weaknesses and defining emerging economic opportunities and employment trends.
- The SCDP is focused on identifying and supporting industry clusters within the region that have common competitive advantages and needs. Many industries located in the SouthCoast may be similar in nature and make use of similar buyers, vendors, workforce, and infrastructure. Supporting and helping project the economic growth and performance of these clusters will help regional policy makers steer our workforce readiness agenda and identify potential industry pilot projects.
- The SCDP is committed to working toward solutions to shrink the skills gap ensuring that available workforce training and education properly prepares individuals to thrive in local industries. This will be accomplished in part by fostering relationships between the Bristol Workforce Investment Board, the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, local employers, K-12 education leaders, UMass Dartmouth, Bristol Community College, and other stakeholders. The goal is to make sure we accurately align training and education with current and projected workforce trends.
